A service to look up the position and details of astronomical objects by name. We contact the relevant astronomical databases for you. Suggestions for changes/improvements are welcome.
The mobile version of this service is intended for mobile phones (cell phones) with very limited capabilities such as small screen sizes. The mobile version makes much better use of the limited space and provides a search button. There are also some differences in the results links because services such as WikiSky/GoogleSky don't work in reduced capability browsers so there is no point linking to them. If you have an iPhone you will have no trouble seeing the standard version of the site.
This service should cover most astronomical objects except for comets.
LookUP is provided for free. If you make use of the service, we request that you attribute it to "LookUP" when space is very limited or to "LookUP (operated by Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics)" elsewhere. A link back to this site would be nice. If you make use of the object data, please attribute the service (e.g. Simbad, NED, SkyBot etc) where those data were found. In the XML output, this can be found within the <service> tag.
Finally, this service is made possible through the use of the SIMBAD database (operated at CDS, Strasbourg, France), the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED; operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration), the SkyBoT project (set up under the auspice of the French Ministry for National Education and CNRS), the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopedia (Jean Schneider, CNRS/LUTH - Paris Observatory), the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Supernovae List (IAU, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory), the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Constellation List (Larry McNish), and the excellent WCSTools package (Doug Mink, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory).
